Residents of Ward 82 and Ward 99 in Johannesburg will head to the polls for a municipal by-election on Wednesday.
Ward 82, covering areas such as Westbury and Newclare, became vacant after the passing of the local councilor. Meanwhile, Ward 99, which includes suburbs like Cresta and Blairgowrie, was left without representation following the councilor’s resignation.
Residents on both wards have complained about high drug and crime rates as well as poor service delivery.
“What I am experiencing as a resident in the area is basically the drug dealing and the shooting, like a lot of things we are experiencing, like the strike. I think the most important thing for all residents is service delivery. So I just think whoever comes in mustn’t come in and just talk because it’s all about service delivery and I have grown up in Johannesburg and I have seen it being destroyed and it’s got to turn around somehow, it has got to turn around,” said one of the residents.
